Open to the Sea is a collaborative process rather than a conventional band, bringing together three Italian artists active since the mid-1990s: Enrico Coniglio, Matteo Uggeri, and Saverio Rosi (who joined in 2022 for the album Tales from an Underground River).

The trio works entirely remotely. Coniglio records guitars, piano, synths, and electronics in Venice; these are then sent to Rosi in Amsterdam (or Lecce), who adds guitar, tapes, turntable, OP-1, and radio; finally, Uggeri in Milan shapes the arrangements, adds field recordings and samples, and completes the production. Or vice-versa. Or in some other way.

Across their albums, they've collaborated with numerous artists, including Dominic Appleton (Breathless, This Mortal Coil), Comaneci, Lau Nau, Violeta Päivänkakkara, Yan Jun, Romina Kalsi/Animor, and British actor John Guilor (voice of the Doctor Who BBC radio drama). Their sound merges ambient textures, melancholic melodies, and experimental arrangements, drawing comparisons to 4AD's aesthetic and ECM's innovative jazz approach.
