Plurals
Plurals formed in 2007 and are currently based in Brighton and London, UK. The band consists of Dave Hamilton-Smith, Mike Neaves and Daniel W J Mackenzie. The group creates improvised music and sound using a variety of instruments and sources including guitar, synthesisers, voice, tape machines, radio, sonified objects, pedals and feedback systems. Though initially associated with the UK noise underground, the band now employs elements from a wide set of genres, resulting in music that is multilayered, progressive, dynamic and surprisingly composed given its improvised nature.
Plurals have released material on Dead Pilot Records, Oaken Palace, Southern Records (Latitudes Sessions), Tor Press, Dead Sea Liner, Striate Cortex, RHP CDrs, Vacant Fulfilment, Structured Disasters, Panarus Productions and Sheepscar Light Industrial. Belgian label Silken Tofu has released a 2xCD live excerpt from a four hour live performance recorded in Ostend, Belgium, as well as a largely ambient 12" called Tri Tone. Additionally, Plurals have issued a small number of self-releases. In April 2023 they debuted on Mahorka with the album "Growing the Sea", released also as digipak CD edition.
Plurals have performed at festivals and in galleries, concert halls, churches, industrial spaces and in smaller independent venues. They have appeared alongside bands such as Rangda (Sun City Girls/Six Organs of Admittance/Flower-Corsano), Master Musicians of Bukkake, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Eternal Tapestry, Alexander Tucker and Manu Delago. In 2011 Plurals toured the UK with Canadian doom duo Nadja and recorded a Latitudes session at the revered Southern Studios in North London with their guitarist Aidan Baker, released in 2013. Plurals have played extensively through the UK and have toured Europe three times, performing in cities including Brussels, Berlin, Frankfurt, Prague, Vienna, Zurich and Paris. The band are currently planning their fourth tour of Europe.
