In the quiet topography of contemporary drone music, a collaboration has formed across national borders that seems as logical as it is poetic: German ambient and drone musician rsn and Swedish sound artist Andreas Rönnquist present “with remoteness”, a joint album that explores the dialogue between two aesthetic styles in four extended pieces. The title says it all. “Remoteness” describes not only the geographical distance between the participants, but also the ethereal sphere in which their music moves.

The starting point was provided by initial sketches by Andreas Rönnquist, whose reduced, circular drone textures have for years been synonymous with Scandinavian coolness and vastness. He made these sonic seeds available to rsn, who not only supplemented them, but also developed them further, reshaped them, and ultimately transformed them into a new dramaturgy. rsn wrote his own parts, layered additional textures, condensed or lightened the material, and arranged the pieces into organically breathing soundscapes. The result was not an additive project, but a genuine intertwining of two perspectives, in which origin and continuation are almost impossible to separate.

The four tracks unfold slowly, with the patient persistence that characterizes the ambient/drone genre. Low-frequency drones lay a foundation over which delicate overtone spectra shimmer, while subtle modulations and barely perceptible shifts in the sound structure create a sense of movement without ever culminating in rhythm or melody in the classical sense. It is music that does not so much tell a story as create space – for concentration, contemplation, perhaps even for a productive loss of oneself in one's own inner world.

The fact that “within remoteness” develops a remarkable presence despite its restraint is due in no small part to the mix by Ghostloop, who is considered a fixture on the ambient scene. With a sure sense of depth and transparency, he balances the layers, gives the drones room to breathe, and lends even the quietest nuances a tangible physicality. The album thus becomes a finely balanced sound space in which distance and proximity, isolation and resonance meet. “within remoteness” is therefore not only a joint work by two artists, but also a study of how connection can arise from distance – quiet, concentrated, and with a meditative intensity that lingers long after listening.
